श्लोकः - 3.293.7



मूलम्-
क्षमावाननपत्यश्च सत्यवाग् विजितेन्द्रियः ।
अतिक्रान्तेन वयसा सन्तापमुपजग्मिवान् ॥7॥

पदविभागः-
क्षमावान् अनपत्यः च सत्यवाक् विजितेन्द्रियः । अतिक्रान्तेन वयसा सन्तापम् उपजग्मिवान् ॥

अन्वयः-
क्षमावान् अनपत्यः च सत्यवाक् विजितेन्द्रियः वयसा अतिक्रान्तेन सन्तापम् उपजग्मिवान् ॥7॥

प्रतिपदार्थः-
क्षमावान् = of enduring nature
अनपत्यः च = child-less
सत्यवाक् = truth-speaking
विजितेन्द्रियः = one who has won over or controlled senses
वयसा = by age, age-wise
अतिक्रान्तेन = by that which passed beyond, got accross
सन्तापम् = distress, torment, suffering
उपजग्मिवान् = underwent, suffered

तात्पर्यम्-
राजा अश्वपति क्षमाशील, सत्यवादी और जितेन्द्रिय होनेपर भी संतानहीन थे । बहुत अधिक अवस्था बीत जाने पर इसके कारण उनके मनमें बड़ा संताप हुआ॥७॥

(The king who was) forbearing, truthful, and of controlled passions, was but childless. By the passing of age, he underwent distress.

[Bearing no child is not only cause of pain as an individual, but also as a king, as there will be no future king. Except that he had no reason to be grieved, as he bore so many good qualities. As the time passes, man gets old, and chances of getting a child decrease.
