मूलम्-
आसीन्मद्रेषु धर्मात्मा राजा परमधार्मिकः ।
ब्रह्मण्यश्च महात्मा च सत्यसन्धो जितेन्द्रियः ॥5॥
पदविभागः-
आसीत् मद्रेषु धर्मात्मा राजा परम-धार्मिकः । ब्रह्मण्यः च महात्मा च सत्य-सन्धः जितेन्द्रियः ॥
अन्वयः-
मद्रेषु (कश्चन) राजा आसीत् । (सः) धर्मात्मा परम-धार्मिकः ब्रह्मण्यः च महात्मा च सत्य-सन्धः जितेन्द्रियः (चासीत्) ॥5॥
प्रतिपदार्थः-
मद्रेषु = In Madra (country)
राजा = king
आसीत् = was there
धर्मात्मा = dharmic, merited soul
परम-धार्मिकः = highly pious, just, virtuous
ब्रह्मण्यः च = Friendly or hospitable to a Brāhmaṇa, (One well-versed in the Veda)
महात्मा च = great virtuous
सत्य-सन्धः = truthful, keeping one’s promise, faithful
जितेन्द्रियः = one who has conquered his passions or subdued the senses
तात्पर्यम्-
प्राचीनकालकी बात है, मद्रदेश में एक परम धर्मात्मा राजा राज्य करते थे । वे ब्रह्मण-भक्त, विशालहृदय, सत्य-प्रतिज्ञ और जितेन्द्रिय थे॥५॥
There was a king in the country of Madra, who was very dharmic minded, devoted to Brāhmaṇas, great-souled, truthful, and had subdued all his passions.
[पाठान्तरम्- (instead of महात्मा च) ‘शरण्यः च’ = a protector, refuge
मद्रेषु = In Madra (country) – Any word denoting the name of a country is always in plural in Samskrta. This may be because of the fact that a nation stands for people.
Certain words like धर्म hold a deeper connotation which cannot translated into English but convey meaning to all Indians and those with background knowledge. Apte gives 23 meanings to this word-
धर्मः [ध्रियते लोकोऽनेन, धरति लोकं वा धृ-मन्; cf. Uṇ 1. 137]
1 Religion; the customary observances of a caste, sect, &c.
